Submission Process:
Query Letters
Before sending a manuscript, it is best to send a one page query letter (a proposal for nonfiction articles) to Dr. Hawama Sattar, in care of HSE.
Paragraph 1: Demonstrate your ability to write while revealing what you'll write about. This paragraph should be 3 to 4 sentences, to clarify the initial statement, while remaining sharply focused and explaining the thrust of the article you are proposing.
Paragraph 2: Tell us your qualifications. Your professional degrees, universities attended, and other academic qualifications. List articles you have published previously. If you are not published, offer to send samples of previous work. In addition, attach a copy of your curriculum vita.
Paragraph 3: Explain what research you will do, or what specifically qualifies you to write this article.
Paragraph 4: In this paragraph, tell us the approximate length of the article you propose, the number of credit hours you project it will be suitable for, and the specific profession(s) you plan to target. Use this paragraph to advise us if you are submitting the proposal to other publishers (termed "simultaneous submissions") or if it has been previously published.
Paragraph 5: In this paragraph, feel free to ask questions and provide other information. If you wish to request a copy of one of our courses, enclose a check for $5.00 to cover the printing and mailing costs. Complimentary courses cannot be used for continuing education credits.
Curriculum vitae
All contributing writers must submit a curriculum vitae on diskette, including academic degrees, professional licenses by board and state, and diplomate status, if applicable.
References
A complete reference list is required. Unless the reference refers to a "classic" work or to studies that have not been repeated, references should not be more than 7 years old. References less than 4 years old are preferred.
References and citations should be prepared in accordance with the fourth edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA). If you are not sure the exact format of a reference, make sure that references in books contain the name of the chapter, name of the book, name of all writers of the chapter, name of all editors, page numbers of the chapter, date of publication, city of publication, and publisher. You can get all of this information to us by copying the first page of the chapter and the first two pages of the text.
Journal articles are similar. Include everybody's name, the title of the article and journal, volume number, issue number, date of publication, and page numbers. Do not abbreviate titles of articles or names of journals, except for JAMA, JADA, MMWR, and NEJM. For electronic sources, be sure to include the address (URL) so that the reference can be checked.
